Over the years, certain fads have come and gone in Lolita fashion, causing mass buying sprees and subsequent bombardment of sales posts afterwards. For the most part, I enjoy the fresh new ideas that shaken up the Lolita world a bit, as it does tend to get a bit mundane with the same types of outfits rehashed over and over again.
Of course, there were also the not-so-great trends, and as much as I would love to laugh at myself trying these things out, I just do not think it is in the cards for me.
Wigs
Before I get into what I consider the negatives about wigs for me, let me get into the positives of why many Lolitas have jumped onto this trend, and are sticking with it.
Wigs are easy to wear, and are great for those bad hair days when you just do not want (or cannot) do anything with your natural hair. They allow you to change your hair color, length, and style on the fly, giving your look a constant update and keeping things fresh for those who like to spice it up every once in a while. Maintenance for a wig can sometimes be much easier to keep up with than your own hair (this depends on the manageability of your natural hair). Wigs are great because if you have a situation where you cannot dye your natural hair, you can don an unnatural colored wig without the consequences. At the same token, if your hair cannot handle any more damage, wigs save your hair from the coloring and styling experience.
So yes, wigs have their positives. As for myself, I have many reason why wigs just do not work for me:
Another very popular trend, especially among Sweet Lolitas, is the use of a stuffed animal as your purse. As adorable as a cute little bear or a sweet loving fawn may be, I do not find these bags to be at all practical, much less useful, in daily life. With certain coordinates, these companions look wonderful and join together beautifully along with the outfit.
On the same token - I want my Lolita outfit to work around me, rather than trying to work around my Lolita outfit. I feel like if I had a bag like this, it would get in the way as I was walking around or shopping. Also, they are known to not hold a lot of content within them, and I carry a 10.1" tablet. That bad boy need to go somewhere, and I am certainly not going to hold it all day!
I would also be absolutely paranoid to not ruin the bag, even more so because as a stuffed animal, the fiber would stain easier than a typical high durability purse. I am such a klutz and a scatter brain - there is no way I would remember to keep an eye on my bag and make sure it was safe from possible damage.
Again, adorable, sweet, cute - all of those things - just does not work with my busy, over-packed life!
And finally ...

So yes, wigs have their positives. As for myself, I have many reason why wigs just do not work for me:
- I overheat all the time, even in the lightest amount of clothing. Wigs are just another layer covering the biggest place heat escapes from my body. There is no reason to cover it any further.
- Going further into that, my natural hair is very thick, silky, and generally in great condition. I have been blessed with a great head of hair. Because of its thickness, I do not need to add more weight to my head (to only overheat me further), and I do not feel my hair needs to be covered.
- I find it much easier to style my natural hair instead of a wig. I have worn wigs in the past for costumes in plays and cosplays. It took me so much longer to manage those wigs and get them to do what I wanted them to do (and these were very high quality wigs!). At the end of the day, I just find it easier to deal with my own mane.
- I have two colors I go between with my hair - dark brown and dark pink. And solid black once. I do not really divert from those colors, and I have no problem going to the salon when my mood changes to get one of the colors dyed into my hair. I also am lucky to have a job where they do not care what I do with my hair. So I do not see the positive of switching around my hair on the fly. I understand the point for others, but for me, nothing really better on that note.
- And finally - and probably my most controversial reasoning for not wearing wigs - in my opinion, wigs cheapen the look of the outfit, and make it look like a costume. Lolita fashion is constantly trying to not be in the costume category. Wigs, in particular unnatural ones, tend to throw it into that category even more so. I feel that by wearing a wig, I am just perpetuating the stereotype. Again, a lot of people will disagree with this point - it is just my opinion.
Stuffed Animal Bags

And finally ...
Bell Sleeves
Ah yes. From long ago, bell sleeves came out of the darkness and slowly started covering Lolita wrists from coast to coast. Lolitas everywhere wondered where there hands went, and the only solace was that somehow some way they could find their fingers.
OK, bell sleeves are not that dramatic, but they certainly give off quite the dramatic flare.
Can I please have a rant about how annoying bell sleeves are to wear? Every time you move your arm, those sleeves get in the way. Every time you lift your arm, the bell sleeves fall into your face. Every time you do anything with your arms, bell sleeves are doing something to be in your business and just make you mad.
Do they look good? If the bell is not overly exaggerated, it does not bother me, but, for example, the huge bell sleeve blouses that came out in the latest Metamorphose lucky packs are just silly. They are at least 12 inches in diameter - it is ridiculous!
I see bell sleeves frequently in the Gothic style, and sometimes it looks great with that style. I also see the positives with it because if you need a longer sleeve length, like myself, it will be that extra few inches you need to hit your wrist (but then it just looks silly because it still looks too short with it falling that way).
I do not think I could pull off that style too well. As a bigger lady, the less fabric the better. Adding more dimension when your body has all the dimensions it needs usually ends up making yourself look bigger than you are. I would like to flatter the figure, not expand it!

This does not mean these trends are not considered Lolita. It just means that I personally would not participate in them. If you do not have the same problems I do with the above three items, then please, rock these items out! Like with any fashion style, certain things look better on certain people.
Are you a fan of any of these trends? My opinion is definitely not the popular one when it comes to these trends. What trends do you love? What trends do you foresee in the future infiltrating our fashion?
What is a Lolita Blog Carnival, and How Can I Be Involved?
It is essentially a circle of Lolita bloggers coming together to write about a similar topic to help them come up with cute post ideas, share each other's opinions and ideas, and share each other's work. To be involved, you must be an active, seasoned Lolita blogger - you can read more about the requirements in the group info at the Facebook group. Be sure to follow all the requirements to submit an application, and you can request to join. The moderators of the group include Caro from FYeahLolita, Victoria from Parfait Doll, and myself. Feel free to contact any of us about how to get involved, or with your application.
