Thrills Thursday: Haenuli Little Prince Reservation, Lolita Fashion Video Featuring Haenuli, AnimeNEXT Featuring Baby, the Stars Shine Bright in Fashion Show

Have you heard of Haenuli yet? If not, you are really missing out on the latest up and coming brand. Really coming out of the woodwork, Haenuli is showing off their stuff with their latest designs, and floating on the latest galaxy trend that has hit seemingly every fashion style imaginable (with Lolita fashion being no exception), they are doing reservations for their new release, "The Little Prince".

Reservations have started, reserve your items now

While on the busy side, it does have a mystical quality that is drawing me to it. Personally, I am very partial to the tights and will probably be picking up a pair. I do not know how I feel about the one-piece; I feel like the top does not go with the bottom. It is a similar feeling I had about their Dreaming Cinderella print as the cut away seemed to be placed randomly (too stark a contrast). I like the Little Prince skirt on its own better.

I also came across this really well-done video about Lolita fashion. It also happens to feature Haenuli, but the first part where it went into the life of the married woman I could really identify with. It just showed her going about her business with her daughter (who is absolutely adorable in her mini Lolita outfits), and everyone enjoying the happiness she brings through her outfits.

The interview with her in-laws is really telling of how the fashion style has not changed who she is; you can tell they believe she should still be allowed to be herself. Keeping your identity after marriage, at least in my experience, seems to be strange to people (like suddenly you have lost your individual lives and have become one entity). Being a part of Lolita fashion just is not a big deal!

Talking about other brands, AnimeNEXT in New Jersey, USA is holding a large fashion show featuring Baby, the Stars Shine Bright. Models have been selected, and the show is going this upcoming weekend! I have not been able to return to AnimeNEXT since 2008, but if anyone is able to get photos of the event, be sure to post them up so us unable to attend can see!

Frills Friday: Green with Envy in Metamorphose Black Raschel Lace

I find a lot of people get reserved about using their own hair in a coordinate, resorting to a wig, especially if the hair color is unnatural. This coordinate shows how you can integrate your hair color with your outfit, and it will not look bad! I find wigs to be a little overdone and unnecessary, and seeing someone sport their own hair is refreshing. The contrast of the black to the green is really well done (the photography is really well done as well, so that is probably helping!). Enjoy this Frills Friday addition!

Thrills Thursday: Lolita Kawaii Weekend Netherlands, Baby, the Stars Shine Bright Survey and Outlet Sale, Innocent World 70% Off Outlet Sale

I have been following the story through Facebook for a while, but they have gone public with it on EGL LiveJournal community. In the Netherlands, they are hosting a weekend of activities featuring Misako Aoki amd RinRin Doll.  Kawaii International is filming the event to be aired on Japanese television channel NHK World. They have an event page on Facebook going with ticket information. Some events going on during the weekend include a tea party, bingo with Lolita fashion items as prizes, performances by the special guests, and a day trip to a castle.

From EGL post
Oh, and in case you did not know yet, Misako Aoki sings now. It is different - lots of auto tune! Not my cup of tea (see what I did there?), but I am sure she will have some kind of fan base for it based on her popularity as a Lolita fashion model. Anyone notice the guitarist to the left onstage breaking it down?

For those looking for the latest drama debacle, there is apparently this thing about international customer service in regards to Baby, the Stars Shine Bright. I personally have ordered directly from them several times before without any issue, but a few people are speaking up about being sent to their blacklist for "no reason". There is an anonymous survey going around that was posted on EGL earlier if you have bought from them before to speak about your experience with them (extremely short, maybe 10 questions tops).

Baby, the Stars Shine Bright is also having an outlet sale, although not as good as the Innocent World one going on.

Innocent World is having a sale that is making their items around the same cost as Bodyline right now (70% off in some cases), so if you have been dying to get some new brand at affordable prices, you cannot beat this sale right now. There is a clear umbrella with their logo for close to $3 USD right now - insane! If I had not just gotten 10 jumper skirts in my last lucky pack from them, I would definitely purchase this adorable tartan one they have on sale for close to $60 USD. You just do not see those kind of low prices with brand, ever!

Frills Friday: Natural Hair in Sweet Lolita Mixed with Liz Lisa

Going on this no-wigs trend, for newer Lolitas, suddenly wigs is coming up as a must-have item. Unless your hair is completely unmanageable, it really is not necessary. This Sweet Lolita outfit shows how you can have your natural hair and still wear a bright, cheery style; wigs are definitely not a requirement to wear Lolita fashion! I like the mixture with Liz Lisa as well, showing how brands known for being the main pieces in other styles (Liza Lisa to Gyaru, in this example) can easily migrate into a Lolita fashion outfit. It is fully utilizing of her wardrobe and not limiting herself to a single idea of what Sweet Lolita can be. The colors meld well together and form a perfect outfit to go about your business. Enjoy this Frills Friday addition!

Lolita Blog Carnival: Surviving the Heat

$
0
0
For those living in warmer climates, or that have hot summers, Lolita fashion is probably the last thing on your mind. Especially if you are plus-size like myself, more layers just leads to more uncomfortable sweating. So what is a frilly person to do?
  • Put your natural hair up. Sometimes it is hot and you can still handle a wig, but I would recommend against it just because your head is a huge route for body heat to escape. Covering it up will make it worse. Same thing with too much on your head in forms of bows, hats, accessories, etc. Consider a small, light bow to the side or back to combat the heat.
  • Bring your parasol. Not only for the rain, but being under a parasol will bring down the temperature under your parasol go down a few degrees. You may think it is not significant enough, but I have found it to be vital to keeping my body temperature down. Plus, it also protects your skin (including the sun screen you should put on as well!)
  • Wear lighter fabrics. Chiffon and light cottons are everyone's friend in the heat! Leave your velveteen and skirts with three layers at home; less will be more helpful to your situation! Cutsews become your friend in this situation - perfect for a light, casual top that you can breathe in.
  • Get your light petticoat out. Smaller, not-as-poofy petticoats are best. Organza and chiffon based petticoats will be the lightest, whereas tulle or thicker materials will just add more layers to your body and less ways for the heat to escape.
  • Ankle socks, or no socks at all! If it is really hot out, do not bother with the knee socks - let your legs be free! Ankle socks, especially the newer ones that are see-through, are a great alternative. You also can get away with no socks if you wear a nice pair of open-toed shoes. Brands put these out during their summer months and advertise them as sandals, but they are much, much more fancy than your average flip flop.
  • One-Pieces with no blouse, or sleeveless blouses. There are many sleeveless blouses that usually look best with a skirt, but under the right cut of a jumper skirt, can work with that as well. A one-piece covers all your bases in terms of main pieces to wear, but sometimes can be a little much in terms of layers. Be sure that the one-piece you pick to wear is light and simple!
Nothing speaks better than some visual examples, so here are some sample coordinates that you can wear with hot temperatures.

First example showcases a sailor inspired outfit (you really cannot have a Lolita fashion summer without at least one of these floating around). Notice how I did not take out the bloomers - although another layer, bloomers are great for capturing sweat around your legs, especially from sitting down for a long period of time in warmer temperatures. I especially like the loose hair do that is mostly up and off the face. No socks with this one either - we are using Baby, the Stars Shine Bright's summer sandals of this season to keep our legs cool. You can see the sources for the other items by clicking on the Polyvore set link.
Casual Summer Lolita Outfit

Say you want something a bit more Gothic - even though the heat is out, you still cannot break away from your dark closet. There are workarounds for that!

I personally own this Surface Spell dress, and it is so comfortable and so light, I feel like I am wearing nothing. At the same time, it is incredibly elegant; I have worn the dress to many occasions in a not-so-much Lolita outfit and received a lot of compliments on it. The dress also comes in other colors like a crimson red that would also look good in a Gothic Lolita wardrobe. Adding the bolero gives you the option to go with or without it, and the hairstyle is actually something I do often with my own hair - poof in the front, pin up randomly in the back with a slight curl. Makes it look a lot fancier than it takes to create, and is easy to add a hair bow too. It is a good alternative to people like me without bangs/fringe. Just need some bobby pins and light hair spray.

I will be the first to admit, I have a serious thing for gold and black together!

Gothic Black and Gold Summer Lolita Outfit

"This is all too dark for me, where are my pastels?" I did not forget about those who like pastels (and you can get anything I mentioned above in pastels as well), so I put together this set from one of my favorite recent releases from Innocent World.

Not only is it chiffon, but it is off the shoulder - perfect for the heat. It comes in various colors, but I am just featuring the pink and blue here for now. I could not find the blue transparent socks like I found with the pink ones, but I know they exist because I own them! I like these pieces because they really can be accessorized up as much or as little as you want, and still look great. I tried to keep it simple because we are trying to not overload ourselves with too many items because of the weather, but these can easily be added to.

Do not forget your parasol!

Light Blue Light Pink Summer Lolita Outfit

What else do you think can make a Lolita's life in the heat better or easier? I would love to hear new suggestions since I struggle with this a lot! When it gets warmer, I tend to just go with an "inspired" Lolita fashion coordinate, because I just cannot deal with the heat - I sweat too much! I really think people who brave the heat regardless are mini-warriors against the weather!

Metamorphose released their summer lucky packs. They are doing something that does not happen very often by releasing a special print that will only be sold during the lucky pack sales. Another words, if this is your dream print, you have to buy it now or hope that someone sells it on the second hand sales communities. For those who have been wanting the Squirrel print, it is back in the smaller skirt and cutsew lucky pack set. These should be live by the time this post goes live, so hurry and purchase if you like what you see!

Metamorphose has been known to do collaborative works with different anime / manga series, and now Innocent World is taking its turn. Hooking up with Rozen Maiden (a typical Lolita fashion inspired anime / manga), they made an announcement a few days ago about the new upcoming series installment. They plan on doing some pieces within their Antique Doll series as well, which you can see the preliminary designs for below.

From Innocent World (do find replace for "2012.2.14")
Dear Margaret has been around for a couple of years, but they decided to take on the international market directly by using Tumblr, and honestly, this is probably one of the smartest moves reach-wise a brand can make right now, considering the popularity of Tumblr within the Lolita fashion community, in particular the international one. What this also allows is for all their updates and releases to be rebloggable, reaching probably a bigger audience than a typical website would (and honestly, with the right people blogging their updates - better than other social media as well). I really love their Sailor series that they just released. It makes me want to buy the XL size and just work my way down to fit into it! No custom sizing with these guys, but they do offer a decent range of sizes.

Perfect for a day out at a festival, like this person did, the shawl combined with a comfortable jumper skirt like Old Emblem and a nice pair of flats is perfect to last anyone all day. I really love how she focused on bringing out the best colors in the print and stuck with jewel tones. Partial to outfits that are practical for every day use, this outfit is no exception. Her hair and makeup is simple and lets the outfit speak for itself. Enjoy this Frills Friday addition!

Frills Friday: Floral Wedding Outfit Classic Lolita

A month or so ago I spoke about dressing appropriately for occasions, and this outfit shows how you can incorporate Lolita fashion into a special occasion without taking from the person of honor. Usually, when I see what people wore to weddings, I really do not like it because it is too much, but this outfit is just enough class without breaking the line and looking out of place. The color palette is muted, but not dull, and it suits her very well! Enjoy this Frills Friday addition!

To keep up-to-date statistics on the Lolita fashion world, this survey series provides trending data for pertinent information in this sub-culture. To use this data in your project or paper, please read the information here. These surveys' polling audience involve a dominantly female English speaking audience with the majority of its participants coming from the EGL LiveJournal community, this blog's followers, and Lolita fashion groups within other social media outlets, like Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook. The exact demographics are provided in the beginning of each survey. Please keep this in mind when using the data for research purposes.
Say hello to Hammie!
The bow makes him so Lolita XD

This survey is meant for those who actively participate in Lolita fashion.

This week's survey is Lolita Fashion & Conventions.

The survey will take 20 - 30 minutes to complete.

Please take the survey here.

Please note: I am trying out a new logic system to help people get around questions that do not apply to them based on how they answered, so some people may have up to a 30 question survey, while others only have 10. Hopefully this helps!

Also, due to constraints with my survey provider, I am unable to provide open-ended "Other" or "Explain" boxes, so if you would like to clarify further on your answer choices, you can do so anonymously on this blog post.

The survey will be available for a week after this post's published date and time. Results will be compiled and available a week after the survey closes.

Thank you for your continued participation in these surveys, and if you would like to take more in the future, follow this blog! You can do so through Twitter, BlogLovin', or Google+

Frills Friday: Simple Pink and White Sweet Lolita

Adorable and simple, this outfit shows you how sometimes, less is more. In this case, a well done hairstyle can boost an otherwise typical outfit to really great, and the Hime vibe this is giving off is adorable. This is also a good example of a muted, more traditional Sweet Lolita; a lot of people think Sweet Lolita and automatically go towards the huge, pastel colored wigs with large accessories and loud prints. That louder style has really only been popular for the last 5 years or so. Just love the beauty and simplicity of this coordinate! Enjoy this Frills Friday addition!

Just a quick post to let you all know that I will be at ConnectiCon again this year, and I will be doing a couple more panels.

ConnectiCon's Website

Full schedule here. (search for the word "Lolita" and you will find the panels related)

There will be two Lolita fashion panels. On Friday, we are having an Every Day Lolita panel, showing different techniques and tips to wearing Lolita fashion every day. On Saturday, we are having our standard Lolita 101 & Swap Meet. This year we get to stay in the panel room for the swap meet, so it will be much easier to find!

Also on Friday, the J-Fashion show is a collaboration with my friends Caro and Remi, and while featuring Lolita fashion, will also include other styles like Mori Kei, Shironuri, Aristocrat, Visual Kei, and more. We have a great group of models to show off these different styles.

On Saturday (completely unrelated, but something else I do), I'm hosting a Geek Jeopardy panel.

Hope to see you all there! :)

I love purple, and I love seeing it done in outfits, especially Lolita fashion outfits because it is not a color you see too often. Her floral head piece is handmade, and really goes well with this Lady Sloth jumper skirt. Everything about this outfit is well coordinated and color coded perfectly - even all the purples match or are at least in the same hue as the darker fade a the bottom of the skirt. Enjoy this Frills Friday addition!

Indie Brands You Should Be Buying From - Updated!: The Snow Field, We're All Mad Here, Dear Margaret

It's been about a year since my last post about indie brands, and since then they have taken off like wildfire. Indie brands in general have changed a lot within this past year, some coming out with similar brand pricing and quality, and others expanding into a larger market.

Although my sentiment about indie brands being a cheaper option seems to be becoming less and less so, I think it is important to note that at the end of the day, you are paying for quality. These items, especially within the indie brand market, are usually made by hand by one or a couple people.

There are three other indie brands that have been coming into the limelight lately through updating often and gaining more popularity within the online and international community. None of them are new on the scene, but they are definitely becoming more and more accessible to the market as a whole.

The Snow Field

I have been keeping my eye on this one for a bit, but after seeing some more reasonable priced items, I think they are making themselves more accessible. The quality is superb and the customer service is just as great, but the Snow Field is one of those indie brands with higher-than-average pricing for indie brand pieces (and rightfully so). They have been making rounds to various conventions and conferences, so you might see them in your local area as well!

We're All Mad Here

Images From Their Online Shop

Another large player that seems to be updating more often is We're All Mad Here. Custom sizing, a punk vibe, and a love for skeletons, they have cornered the idea of creepy cute and made a place for it to live and thrive. One of their popular designs, Sugary Bones, showcases a skeletal print rounding the bottom of a skirt in pretty, Sweet Lolita colors like lavender and mint.

Dear Margaret

Images From Their Tumblr

After announcing their international website on Tumblr, Dear Margaret basically exploded. I think this brand has been relatively unnoticed (not unknown - we have all heard of them before) since their Tumblr debut, although they have been known in other international communities (in particular, South Korea), Tumblr really helped them get on the big stage. I am seeing a lot of their coordinates and stock photos rumbling through others reblogs, and becoming a new favorite now that they have an easier place to access the international market.

Their prices are incredibly reasonable for something brand new and brand quality; I would say their only downside right now is quantity of different kinds of items. The few items they put out makes up for this.

And once again, we have our all-together indie brand list. I've removed several that were inactive from last year's list. Please, if you have an active indie brand (you have updated within the last 3 months and has items for sale) you would like on here, comment with the link below.

Thrills Thursday: Rococo Daze Chantilly x JetJ Lucky Packs, Baroque Custom Color Three Strap Ribbon Shoes, Nuigulumar Z Movie Trailer Featuring Lolita Fashion

Rococo Daze, the new brand stockist in England, is doing a lucky pack release for their two bigger brands, Chantilly and Juliette et Justine. A great way to get the word out there about their new store, and a great way to get your hands on some typically high priced items at a decent rate. If you are within the UK or Europe, this is a great deal for you. Not sure about the U.S. customers, but still an option if you are looking to get your hands on either of these brands.

From Rococo Daze
They are offering 4 different kinds of lucky packs - small, medium, big accessory, and big. The small includes 5 accessories, the medium includes a top or skirt and 3 accessories, the big accessory includes a bonnet or petticoat and 3 accessories, and the big includes a dress and 3 accessories.

The lucky packs will release Sunday, August 11th at 9pm BST.

Baroque is taking orders for their first shoe design, the Three Strap Ribbon Shoes. I am pointing these out because after contacting them directly, they are willing to do any color you want for only $10 USD more. Considering that these shoes seem like a great basic Lolita fashion shoe that could fit into any wardrobe, this is a great deal!

From Baroque's Facebook
From Baroque's Facebook
Have a dress with a non-typical color you are having a hard time matching? You can get this shoe to match that dress perfectly! I personally wanted to get this shoe in silver as well as the gold they have available, and was able to order silver and gold! They also have a wide range of sizes from 22cm - 25.5cm. They will also do a custom size for $15 USD more. Reservation period is ending (I believe) August 16th, 2013 on these.

Nuigulumar Z is an upcoming live-action movie directed by Noboru Iguchi starring Rina Takeda. Description from the YouTube video:

Yumeko Ayukawa, better known as Dameko, is a lolita fashion-clad girl who possesses the ability to merge with her pink teddy bear Buusuke to become ""Nuigulumar"". In her new form she must do battle against a villain named Takeshi who's using zombies in his plot to take over the world.

It is going to be released January 25th, 2014, and I have no idea why I am so excited for this movie. It speaks to me in so many ways - my desire to be able to get out of a situation by merging with my teddy bear, or my endless crusade of destroying zombies. So many things to love, such little time. It is always great to see a movie featuring someone in Lolita fashion!

This is probably going to turn into a movie night with my local community - for sure! Talk about a good excuse for a Guro/Zombie Lolita themed meetup (just kidding - or maybe not!).

Frills Friday: Adorable Sweet Deco Lolita

It is so hard to find Deco Lolita without unnaturally colored hair, but one of my favorites, RaineDragon, produced this adorable coordinate with a brunette look. She is deco'ed out everywhere, while still remaining balanced and cute (you tend to see people go too far overboard with the accessories). The colors mesh well into a sweet pastel palette. Enjoy this Frills Friday addition!
